Lesson 6 of 6 · When it is anxiety, and where to go
Who to ask, and what to expect
Start with your institution. Almost every university and college has a student support or wellbeing service, and using it is not a mark on your record. They also handle the things this course deliberately does not touch, which are extensions, mitigating circumstances, and what you may or may not have to disclose. That is their expertise and it is not ours.
Outside that, your doctor can refer you, or you can look for a therapist who names anxiety rather than talking therapy in general.
Going is not a step outside the religion, and the instruction is in the reports in the form of the question you are already asking. They asked, Messenger of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age. One thing worth knowing, since you may go looking: a young man once wrote to a fatwa site asking whether his fear of meeting people meant his faith was weak. The answer, at answer 21865, was that it does not, so long as the obligatory duties are being kept, and it advised him to see a doctor who specialises in treating psychological illness.
The first appointment is somebody asking what has been happening and for how long. It is about an hour and most of it is you talking. If your faith matters to how you want this handled, say so at the start.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Going is not a step outside the religion, and the instruction comes in the form of the question you are already asking. They asked whether they should make use of medical treatment and were told to.
Narrated Usamah ibn Sharik: I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions were sitting as if they had birds on their heads. I saluted and sat down. The desert Arabs then came from here and there. They asked: Messenger of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age
