If you need help now someone to contact, by country

Lesson 6 of 6 · When loneliness has become depression

If fear is the main thing, it has its own treatment

Some people are not short of contact. They are frightened of it. The dread starts days before, the attention swings inward while it is happening, and afterwards the whole thing gets replayed for hours.

If that is closer to your experience, the treatment with the strongest evidence behind it involves working out with a trained person a series of small steps back toward what you have been avoiding, at a pace the two of you agree.

We are not going to walk you through that, and you should not assemble it for yourself from an article. Built alone it usually goes wrong, because people push far too hard, frighten themselves badly, and conclude they are beyond help. Built with somebody trained, it works well. That is why lesson four gave you one ordinary thing you chose and not a ladder.

One thing worth knowing before you decide this is a religious problem. A young man once wrote to a fatwa site asking whether his fear of meeting people meant his faith was weak. The answer, at answer 21865, was that it does not, so long as the obligatory duties are being kept, and it advised him to go to a doctor who specialises in treating psychological illness.
