One sentence, changed at one word

Here is the actual move, and it is small enough to be disappointing.

When the sentence arrives, and it will arrive in the form I am, put it back in the form I did. Not as a trick and not as positive thinking. As accuracy. I am a fraud is not a more honest version of I did something I believe is wrong. It is a less accurate version, and it happens to be the version that sends you back round.

You will not feel better immediately. That is not what it is for. What it does is keep the feeling attached to an act, and a feeling attached to an act has somewhere to go, which is the repair the tradition already gave you.

Then the day carries on. That last part is not a throwaway line. The day carrying on is the whole intervention.

One report sits under how small that is, and the proportions in it are the argument. If he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him. If he comes to Me walking, I go to him running. The unit asked of you is a span.

And one more thing, which is not an instruction. Ibn al-Qayyim relates, in Madarij al-Salikin, a saying of one of the knowers: ويحكى عن بعض العارفين أنه قال : دخلت على الله من أبواب الطاعات كلها فما دخلت من باب إلا رأيت عليه الزحام فلم أتمكن من الدخول حتى جئت باب الذل والافتقار فإذا هو أقرب باب إليه وأوسعه ولا مزاحم فيه ولا معوق. Our rendering, and not a published translation: I came to Allah by every door of obedience, and I did not enter by a door but that I found a crowd at it and could not get in, until I came to the door of lowliness and need, and it was the nearest door to Him and the widest, with nobody crowding it and nothing obstructing. He gives it as somebody else's saying rather than his own. It does not tell you that you are wrong about your state. It says the state you are in is the nearest door.
