Parents often carry a quiet fear that something they did, or something modern, caused this. Grandparents with the same traits simply grew up without a name for them and were called lazy or difficult instead. If it helps, look sideways along the family before you go hunting for a cause in the last ten years.
Everything has its measure with Him (Quran 13:8). What is in a person was already measured out, whether or not the age they grew up in had a word for it.

A national survey of what the public actually knows about children's mental health problems found real gaps in recognition, with delays in seeking help linked to not knowing what was being looked at. That supports recognition, rather than incidence, as the thing that has been moving. It measures public knowledge and belief, so it does not itself track prevalence over time.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
When a condition becomes better known, more of the people who always had it come forward, which changes the count rather than the reality.
Before you decide who in front of you looks like ADHD, notice the picture you are already carrying. The loud boy gets sent for assessment and the quiet, drifting girl often does not.
Telling parents that their child's self-management is running behind their age usually brings relief rather than alarm. It names something they had already noticed and had been blaming somebody for.
The first year away at university takes away nearly every bit of structure at once and asks a young person to build their own. It is one of the commonest points at which ADHD finally shows itself.
