The belief tends to sound like: there is something wrong with me and people will find out. It shows up as bracing for criticism, or hearing an ordinary correction as proof of what you always suspected. Naming where it came from does not erase it, but it separates what happened to you from what you are. If you are supporting someone with ADHD, ask about school rather than waiting for it to come up.
We have honoured the children of Adam (Quran 17:70). That honour comes with being human and was never in the hands of a teacher who misread you.

A national survey documented how reluctant the public is to be close to children carrying a mental health label, which puts a measurable social cost next to the diagnosis. It describes attitudes across a population rather than what happened to any one child. It does support the idea that the shame around this was in the air and not something you invented.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Being treated as bad rather than as struggling teaches a person to explain their difficulties by their character.
If revisiting those memories leaves you distressed for days rather than sad for an hour, do this work alongside a therapist rather than alone.
Ask yourself two questions: how did I actually do, and what do I think I could have done. The gap between those two answers is real, and it is usually where the grief sits.
More people being recognised is not the same as more people having it. What has changed over recent decades is awareness, not the number of minds built this way.
A forgotten item in a bag is not a plan. Rules that treat the presence of something as proof of intent fall hardest on people who cannot reliably remember what is in their pockets.
