Set it with the young person rather than at them, and be clear it is about the road and not about whether you trust them. It also moves medication out of being a school day arrangement, which matches where the risk actually sits. Take it to the prescriber as well, since timing matters and a dose that has worn off by six is not covering an evening drive.
You can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know (Quran 16:43). The timing questions here are exactly the sort to take to the person who prescribes.

A meta-analysis of imaging studies examined what stimulant medication actually does to brain function in ADHD, an area far less understood than the medication's effect on symptoms. So the mechanism behind a rule like this is only partly mapped. Decisions about dose and timing belong with the prescriber rather than with a household rule of thumb.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Tying a freedom people value to the thing that makes it safer keeps both in the same conversation.
Never change a dose or its timing to fit a driving plan without the prescriber agreeing to it.
Far more people have ADHD than are ever assessed for it. If you have wondered about yourself for years, the odds that an assessment would be worth your time are better than you think.
Retirement takes away the timetable, the colleagues and often the person who kept the diary, and for someone with ADHD that can be the point where everything unravels.
A forgotten item in a bag is not a plan. Rules that treat the presence of something as proof of intent fall hardest on people who cannot reliably remember what is in their pockets.
