No blood test or cheek swab will tell you in advance which one suits you. Finding out means trying, measuring and being willing to change, which is slow and faintly disappointing to hear. Keep a note of what you took, at what dose, and what happened, because that record is what makes the next attempt smarter than the last one.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend' (Quran 33:5). A first choice that turns out not to suit you was not a wrong done. It was the only way to find out.

A systematic review of pharmacogenetics found genetic variants explained some of the variation in how adults respond to methylphenidate, though nowhere near enough to guide prescribing in practice. A separate meta-analysis found stimulants produce small but consistent rises in heart rate and blood pressure in adults, real enough to be worth monitoring. Together they describe the position honestly: measure and adjust, because prediction is not yet available.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
People differ in how they handle these drugs, and nothing yet predicts it except trying.
If sleep has gone since starting, look at what time the dose is being taken before deciding the medicine is the problem. A long acting dose swallowed at one in the afternoon is still working at bedtime.
You will hear confident claims in both directions: that stimulants permanently rewire a child's brain, and that they leave nothing behind at all. The honest position sits between the two, and it helps to know which parts are settled.
If a young driver in your house takes medication, the dose and the car keys belong together. Driving is the everyday task where one lost second costs the most.
