The stretch between starting and being any good is where most attempts die, because the reward sits a long way off and today feels like nothing. Build in something you can win this week: a walk you finished, three sessions ticked off, a hill that got easier. The hope is not the problem. Hanging all of it on a distant result is.
Man will only have what he has worked towards (Quran 53:39). What accumulates is the work, which is a slower and steadier thing than a result you can point at this week.

Gathering up the better meta-analyses, researchers found physical activity had a small to moderate effect on depression and anxiety in adults without a clinical diagnosis. Small to moderate is the honest size of the thing. Expecting roughly that much makes it easier to notice when it turns up, whereas expecting transformation makes a real effect look like nothing at all.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Small wins arrive soon enough to keep you going, which is a job a distant goal cannot do on its own.
Whatever gets you outside and quiet for a stretch of time counts. Fishing, sitting in a hide, weeding, waiting in the car park with the window down.
If a child is climbing the walls, green space helps most, a walk down a busy street helps a bit, and staying in the room helps least. Any of the three beats none.
Bolt the movement onto something you would want to do anyway. A game with a friend, a walk to somewhere with good coffee at the end, a route past the river.
