That does not make the rest of the work pointless, and it does change the order things go in. Where someone is drowning, the fastest reliable help goes first and everything else gets built around it. Say it plainly and without any triumph, because a parent hearing it has usually been told the opposite somewhere that sounded kinder.

A network meta-analysis of randomised trials in children and adolescents found stimulant medication produced the largest symptom reductions of any single intervention, with non-pharmacological options doing less well on the same outcome measures. Those measures are symptom scales rather than a whole life, and the comparison is between single interventions rather than sensible combinations of them. Within those limits the ranking has been consistent.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Medication acts on the circuitry itself, while behavioural work acts on what happens around it.
For someone who cannot swallow tablets, or whose mornings fall apart long before the tablet gets taken, patches exist that release medicine slowly through the skin over hours.
A workable rule for anything new: do not be the first to use it, and do not be the last either. Both ends carry a cost.
An immediate release dose gives you the whole thing at once: quick to start, strong at the top, gone within a few hours. If that is what you take, put the demanding things inside the hours it actually covers.
