Saying that is not the same as saying there is nothing to watch. Heart rate and blood pressure shift a little, appetite and sleep often need managing, and everybody deserves review. What it means is that the risks are known, measurable and mostly reversible, while the risks of leaving the difficulty untreated are real and much less often counted. Put both columns in front of a family instead of only one.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'check it first, in case you wrong others unwittingly' (Quran 49:6). A frightening story about a medicine deserves that check before it is allowed to decide anything.

Large studies linking prescription records with national registers associate ADHD medication with fewer injuries and accidents and with lower criminality, though the authors stress these are not randomised data and need careful interpretation. A meta-analysis in adults separately found small but consistent increases in heart rate and blood pressure, enough to warrant monitoring. Held together they describe a favourable balance with something specific to keep an eye on.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A risk you can measure and reverse is easier to live with than one nobody looks at.
New medicines will probably come from genetics and from the chemistry of the frontal lobes. None of it is close enough to be worth waiting for.
Doing the behavioural work alongside a medicine can mean managing on less of it. That matters most for the side effects that follow the size of the dose.
When appetite disappears at lunchtime, work with the child's rhythm instead of against it. Feed them properly at the hours they are actually hungry, which is usually breakfast and then the late afternoon and evening.
