What gets described as the medicine not working is often the shape of the day being wrong: too slow to start, too abrupt at the end, strongest at the wrong hour. Those are properties of the container rather than of the drug. Before moving to another class altogether, it is fair to ask whether the same molecule in another form has been tried.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend' (Quran 33:5). Finding the right form takes some trial and error, and the wrong turns are not held against you.

The reason to persist is the size of what is on offer. A systematic review with network meta analysis of randomised trials in children and adolescents found stimulant medication produced the largest symptom reductions of any single intervention studied, with the non drug options doing less well on those same measures. Symptom scales are a narrow outcome and this does not decide what treatment anyone should have, though walking away from the best supported option over a formulation mismatch is a real loss.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The container decides when the medicine arrives, and arriving at the wrong time looks exactly like not working.
The stimulants get described as dopamine drugs, and they touch noradrenaline as well. That second effect is what led to medicines aimed at noradrenaline on its own.
Some students do well on a long acting dose through the day plus a small short acting one in the evening for studying. Which short acting drug is chosen matters, because some are gentler on sleep than others.
There are really only two directions in the nervous system, go and stop. Almost everything a medicine does comes down to shifting the balance between them somewhere.
