Longevity is a different argument from a trial result. It means decades of changing fashion, competing products, repeated safety scares and reviews, and the thing is still in use. That is worth something when you are weighing whether this is a passing enthusiasm. It tells you nothing about how it will suit you, which only trying it carefully can.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'Who has forbidden the adornment and the nourishment God has provided for His servants?' (Quran 7:32). A long established remedy belongs among things provided rather than among things to be suspicious of.
الأعراف

The long view still has gaps in it. A review of controlled and naturalistic studies of stimulants and atomoxetine in adults concluded that short term efficacy is well documented while the evidence for long term effects on real world outcomes remains limited. So the drugs are old and the long range questions are partly still open. Both of those are true at once.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A treatment that outlives repeated scrutiny has been tested in a way no single study manages.
When you are weighing up whether a teenager is ready for something, it helps to think in two thirds. A fifteen year old may be handling responsibility more like a twelve or thirteen year old.
A nerve cell spends its life adding up. Signals arrive along its branches, the body of the cell totals them, and at one particular point it either fires or it does not.
Medication belongs in ordinary treatment here rather than at the end of the queue. Most people with a clear diagnosis will use it at some point.
