That is a good sentence to have ready before the first prescription. What a drug can hand you is capacity: a little more room to hold your attention, a little less effort spent staying afloat. Where you point that capacity stays yours, and it usually needs deciding on paper rather than in your head. People who expected direction from a tablet are the ones most likely to call it a failure.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'each gains whatever good it has done' (Quran 2:286). What you do with the capacity is still yours and still counts.

God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’

In the long follow up of the large multimodal treatment study, it was childhood clinical and family factors rather than which treatment a child had been assigned to that predicted how they were doing as adults. That is about ADHD treatment across years rather than about any single week. It fits the picture of medication as one input among the many things that shape where a life goes.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Having more capacity and knowing where to spend it are two different problems.
A prescribed dose swallowed as a tablet is set to bring you into the ordinary range, not to make you high. The rise it produces is too slow and too small to be the sort of thing anybody chases.
Blood pressure on a stimulant is an individual matter. For most people it is a non-event, and where it does rise the answer is often a different stimulant rather than none at all.
A single nerve cell can be in contact with hundreds of others. That fanning out is the plainest reason side effects exist at all.
