That trade is worth naming out loud rather than settling on someone's behalf. For a person whose entire difficulty is the daily doing, weeks of cover can change a life. For a person who is nervous about side effects, being unable to stop is frightening, and the fear deserves a proper answer rather than reassurance. This route is used mostly in other conditions rather than in ADHD, though the trade is the same wherever it turns up.

'God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak' (Quran 4:28). Choosing the arrangement that carries less daily weight is allowed to be a reason in itself.

Why people stop taking medication has been studied in its own right. A study combining prescribing records with interviews looked at young people who came off ADHD drugs and found side effects, changing need over time, and family attitudes driving the decision. Qualitative work of this kind describes reasons rather than counting how often each one decides matters, and it makes clear that stopping is usually a considered choice rather than simple forgetting.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Taking away a daily task helps most when the daily task is the thing that keeps failing.
Waiting to see how they get on carries a cost that is easy to miss. Every year a child spends behind narrows what is available to them the year after.
Much of the progress in these medicines over the past twenty years has been in how the drug is delivered rather than in new molecules. So if one version did not suit you, another form of the same drug can still be worth a try.
After a message has been delivered, the cell hoovers up what is left over and packs it away to use again. A reuptake inhibitor simply slows that hoovering down.
