People often conclude that a whole class has failed them when what failed was one release pattern: too sharp, too short, too much at once. That is a reasonable thing to raise again with a prescriber, even a year or two later. Nothing is lost by asking, and the trial and error is expected rather than a sign that anybody got it wrong the first time.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend' (Quran 33:5). Trying something that turns out not to fit is not a fault, which is worth hearing if you feel you failed at a medication.

A clinical review looking back over twenty years of ADHD research sets out both what has been established about treatment and what has not, including changes in how the condition itself is defined. Reviews of that kind are useful for the shape of a field rather than for any individual decision. The honest summary is that the medicines are broadly well studied while the question of what suits a particular person is still worked out one person at a time.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The same drug delivered differently reaches you differently, so a second attempt is not a repeat of the first.
Some medicines arrive inactive and only become active once the body has broken them apart. Because that conversion happens at a fixed rate, the peak is blunted, the effect stretches out, and getting the drug in faster does not make it work faster.
The stimulant shortage is not your pharmacy being disorganised. Regulators set a fixed annual quota of the raw material, and the ceiling has been too low to cover the prescriptions being written.
These are among the best studied medicines in psychiatry, in use for decades. Most of the hesitancy around them traces back to how they get covered in the press rather than to the safety record.
