Ask what has been posted, what has been sent, what someone would not want read out. Not as an inspection and not as a lecture about permanence, but as part of the ordinary check you would make about who somebody is spending time with. Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Online conduct carries real consequences, and consequences that arrive all at once are the ones nobody was watching for.
If something posted has already led to threats, exclusion or harm, that is a safety matter for the school or the authorities rather than something to manage inside the family alone.
A whole evening can go into recording an evening. It is worth asking, with no scolding in it, whether you were there for the thing you now have a photograph of.
Check, feel the small relief, put it down, feel the pull again a minute later. If your phone use has that shape, it is running like a compulsion, whatever else it is.
When someone says they did not really mean it, that it was not really them, the temptation is to hear an excuse. It is usually better information than that.
