The catch is that the daft step has to be the whole of what you agreed to do, not a trick for getting yourself to do the enormous thing. Most days you carry on once you have started. On the days you do not, you still did the step, and that counts. Write the small version down where you can see it, because in the moment your mind will helpfully offer you the big version again.
God has set a due measure for everything (Quran 65:3). Giving a task a measure you can actually meet is closer to the spirit of that than facing the whole of it at once.

A systematic review confirmed that putting things off goes together with ADHD often enough to be a genuine pattern, while noting that the mechanisms behind it are still unclear. So the pattern is well documented and the explanation above, that the size of the first step is what stops you, is one account among several. That makes this worth trying on yourself and keeping only if your own weeks change.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Starting is priced by how large the job looks rather than how large it is, so cutting the first step below your resistance is what gets you moving.
Pick one aim big enough to hold the year, and let it be the thing you measure choices against. Not a list of values. One.
Putting something in the diary does not guarantee it happens. It gives it a chance it did not have before. That is the honest promise, and it is still worth having.
