It might be finishing the course, or being the parent who is actually there in the evenings. When something new arrives you hold it against that one aim and ask whether it serves it. The real work of a north star is not what it lets in, it is what it lets you put down without guilt.
Put me in charge of the nation's storehouses: I shall manage them prudently and carefully (Quran 12:55). He names the aim and the manner in the same breath, before a single decision is made.

A systematic review with meta-regression across lifestyle change programmes asked which specific techniques separated the ones that worked from the ones that did not, instead of treating all such programmes as one thing. How a plan is set up seems to matter more than how ambitious it is. That work was on activity and eating in overweight and obese adults, so applying it to a personal aim is an inference rather than a finding.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Checking a new job against one fixed aim is far less work than weighing it against everything else you are doing.
If you cannot start, the step is too big. Shrink it until it sounds daft: open the document, write the date, put one plate in the sink.
If you are pulled towards risk, you will do better giving that pull somewhere with a floor under it than trying to switch it off. Fast, high, cold, loud: choose the planned version rather than the one that turns up at two in the morning.
When someone asks for an hour of your time, your head searches for a clash, finds nothing, and says yes. A calendar with everything already in it turns that guess into something you can look at.
