A five minute catch-up with someone every couple of days does more than a beautifully drawn plan for the whole six weeks. In work with little structure, arrange them yourself: a quick message on Monday and Thursday saying where things are up to. The point is that something real happens inside the window you can actually feel.
'You will progress from stage to stage' (Quran 84:19). Getting somewhere is described as a sequence rather than a leap, and checkpoints only make the stages visible.

In a study of 132 children, richer future time perception and more detailed imagining of future events went with a greater ability to wait for a real reward. It is a correlation in children, so it does not show that shrinking a deadline improves anything. It does fit the shape of this: how far and how clearly you can see ahead is tied to what you can hold out for.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A near date is one you can respond to, and a far one you cannot.
That Thursday night feeling, fully motivated at last with no good option remaining, is a trap in the timing rather than a fault in you.
Running late is one thing. Running late with no message is two things. If it is the text that keeps going missing, put a small cost on the text specifically: no message, you do the washing up.
Hang something small and near on the task. No coffee until the expense form is in. Not a treat later in the month, something you actually want in the next ten minutes.
