So say the return out loud and mean it. I am not dropping this, I will be back at nine and we will finish it. Then be back at nine. A few kept returns do more about the chasing than any amount of asking for space. And if you are the one who chases, say what you are actually afraid of, because come back here and I am frightened this gets buried are heard very differently.
'Do not worry, God is with us' (Quran 9:40). What settles the other person is not the argument, it is being told plainly that they are not being left.

Even if you do not help the Prophet, God helped him when the disbelievers drove him out: when the two of them were in the cave, he [Muhammad] said to his companion, ‘Do not worry, God is with us,’ and God sent His calm down to him, aided him with forces invisible to you, and brought down the disbelievers’ plan. A systematic review of experimental studies of social exclusion in psychiatric populations found that being shut out feeds into disorder developing and persisting. Most of that experimental work used healthy volunteers, so the clinical side is less firm than the effect itself. It is enough to say that being left outside a conversation is not a neutral experience for the person left there.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Chasing is a reasonable prediction based on what has happened before, so it settles when the prediction stops coming true.
Worry done on your own goes round in circles. Said out loud to one other person, it usually turns into a problem with edges, and sometimes into a next step.
When you cannot skip it, shorten it. Come for the meal and skip the drinks afterwards. Two hours of you at your best is worth more to everyone than five hours ending badly.
Whatever the correction is, teach it before you need it. A routine the child already knows can be started with two words instead of a negotiation in front of everybody.
