It is harder to catch than obvious time wasting because it leaves you nothing to feel guilty about. At the end of the day the shelf is tidy, the small jobs are gone, and the difficult thing has not moved an inch. Once the pattern has a name in your head, a tidy shelf stops being proof of a good day and becomes a question worth asking.
Do not say of anything, I will do that tomorrow (Quran 18:23). The sentence is seldom said out loud, but a busy day spent on easier work is the same sentence in another form.

A meta-analysis drawing on 691 correlations found that putting things off is predicted best by how unpleasant the task feels, how little confidence you have in doing it, and how far off the deadline is, rather than by laziness or poor values. That fits an afternoon spent on genuinely useful smaller jobs while the hard one waits. The work pooled is correlational, so it maps what travels with avoidance rather than settling what causes it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A task that feels productive hands you a reason not to look at the one you are avoiding.
Sometimes the small job really is the next thing that needs doing, so treat this as a question to ask yourself rather than a rule to obey.
Shrink the first step until it takes two minutes, and do only that.
The real prize for starting early is that you are allowed to stop. At the last minute you have to keep going until it is finished, however late that turns out to be.
Getting yourself going today usually means borrowing a feeling from later in the week. You are not summoning willpower so much as bringing Thursday's relief, or Thursday's panic, forward into Monday.
