Written out on paper it usually stops being a blur. You often find the trigger was small and the meaning was enormous, or that your body was already braced before anybody said anything. That is not an exercise in blame, it is just a way of getting a shapeless event into a form you can look at, and it works as well the next day as it does in the moment.

A meta-analysis of 96 studies of eating difficulties found that not knowing what you feel, and not being able to tell one feeling from another, carried large associations with the problem, alongside difficulties with acceptance and reappraisal. So a lack of clarity is not a minor detail, it is part of the picture. Those studies measured things travelling together rather than showing what causes what.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A thing with parts can be examined, and a formless thing can only be endured.
You cannot ask for something you cannot feel the want of. Before working out how to say it, spend a minute finding what you actually need.
Going deeper into a feeling only helps if it is being put in order at the same time. Depth without order is just flooding.
Watch for the swerve. Right after something tender gets said, along comes a story about a brother or a colleague or a thing from years ago, and the tender part quietly gets left behind.
