A softer face, a slower voice, unhurried breathing and something friendly to look at are not decoration. They are the reachable end of the circuit that signals safety. It also means you can read the same signs in somebody else, and that what you do with your own face reaches them without a word being said.
'It is God who endowed you with hearing, sight, and hearts' (Quran 23:78). Ears, eyes and heart are named together, which is roughly the circuit being described.
المؤمنون
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِيٓ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةَۚ قَلِيلࣰ ا مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ

A meta-analysis pooling heart rate variability with brain imaging found this heart measure tracks activity in the networks that handle emotion and threat, which supports treating the heart as an index of regulation rather than only a pump. The link from face and voice to that circuit comes from anatomy and theory more than from outcome trials. Reasonable, and not the same as proven.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The circuit runs through the parts of you that meet other people, so those parts are the way in.
The goal is not to have less energy. It is to have a brake you can feather rather than slam.
Heart rate variability is not about how fast your heart beats. It is about how much the gaps between the beats vary as you breathe.
If you went blank or floppy while something terrible was happening, that was your body conserving you. It is the oldest survival setting you have, not a failure of nerve.
