If that bargain feels familiar, notice that it was clever rather than foolish. A small person who depends on someone cannot afford to know that person is dangerous, so the blame goes to the only place available. Undoing it as an adult is less about arguing with the belief and more about slowly letting yourself see those adults as they actually were, which is why it can feel frightening before it feels freeing.
'We have honoured the children of Adam' (Quran 17:70). The verdict a frightened child reached about themselves runs against a worth that was given rather than awarded for good behaviour.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
The self blame was protecting something, so it holds on until the thing it protected feels survivable.
This is tender ground, so if the old story starts coming apart, do it with support rather than in one sitting alone.
Shame is visible before it is spoken. Shallow breath, eyes down, shoulders curling in, a voice gone small: the body says it first.
With someone deep in shame, your steady presence is not the warm up before the useful part. It is the useful part.
When someone's shame fills the room, check your own state before you say anything. If you start to shrink, or to worry that you are handling this badly, they will feel it.
