Areas › Low mood and hard feelings › Shame
If you keep trying to cry and nothing comes, or you know you should be furious and feel only flat and small, look at what is sitting on top. Naming the shame first usually lifts it a little, and then the other feelings turn up by themselves, sometimes all at once. None of it needs forcing. The order matters more than the effort.
'Go and seek news of Joseph and his brother and do not despair of God's mercy' (Quran 12:87). A grieving father speaks his loss plainly to the sons who wronged him and still keeps mercy in view, rather than sealing the feeling away.
My sons, go and seek news of Joseph and his brother and do not despair of God’s mercy- only disbelievers despair of God’s mercy.’

In a six month study of 98 adults with obesity, weight related shame predicted more avoidant coping over time while guilt was less damaging. That is one specific group and an observational design, so it does not settle the mechanism, though it fits the wider pattern that shame closes people down where other painful feelings do not.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Feelings that would draw attention to you stay shut down while being seen still feels dangerous.
With someone carrying old shame, ask about the closeness itself. Is it alright that I am sitting here with you? Would a bit more space help? Then adjust, and let them see you adjust.
A friend or a counsellor telling you that you are not a monster helps, and it only takes you so far. The shame usually sits with one particular person, and it eases most when that person hears the thing and stays.
You did not choose which things hurt you. Where you are tender was set long before you had any say in it, and the only live question is what you do with it now.
