A splash at the sink, a few minutes outside in cold air, or a bowl of cold water if you have one to hand. There is a quieter version for when you cannot leave the room: hold a mouthful of cool water and pay attention to the temperature with your tongue. Practise it on an ordinary day so that it is already familiar on the day you need it.
'Do not be afraid, I am with you both' (Quran 20:46). Something steadying arriving from outside you is the shape of this one.

A systematic review of interoception in chronic pain found that people with persistent pain perceive their internal bodily state differently, and it separates accuracy, self reported sensitivity and awareness as three distinct things. Sensing temperature or heartbeat is not equally straightforward for everybody, which is worth knowing before you judge your own results. The review does not test cold water, so that part is practice wisdom rather than evidence from this bank.

If you are using this to get through urges to harm yourself, tell somebody and get proper support alongside it, and avoid very cold water if you have a heart condition.
Relaxation exercises make some people feel worse, and there is a reason for it. The branch that gives you rest when you are safe is the branch that gives you shutdown when you are not.
Long histories of unresolved stress show up in bodies: inflammation, gut trouble, broken sleep, conditions that end up labelled unexplained. Being told it is all in your head is both wrong and useless.
Most of the research on this programme was done with autistic children. For trauma, what exists is case reports and studies still under way.
