The one sentence

This one is about a sentence you have been carrying, not about a behaviour.

The move

Saying the thing without the heat

10 minutes or less

  1. Wait until you are past the surge. Not during.
  2. Write one sentence with the complaint in it and no verdict on the person. The bins were not put out is a complaint. You never do anything is a verdict.
  3. Read it back and take out anything that would make you flinch if it were said to you.
  4. Say it once, and then stop talking and let them answer.

If it does not work

If the sentence keeps coming out as a verdict, that usually means the real complaint is bigger than the incident. Write the bigger one down for yourself and still say only the small one out loud today.
