This is not walking out, and it is not the silent treatment

Three things look similar from the outside and only one of them is the technique.

Walking out is leaving with no sentence and no time, and the other person does not know if you are coming back tonight. That is frightening to be on the receiving end of, particularly for a child.

The silent treatment is coming back and then withholding, using the quiet as the punishment. That does more damage over a year than the shouting did, and it is not restraint in any sense the last lesson described.

The pause is the one with a sentence and a time in it, and a return. If your family have learned that when you go quiet and leave, something bad follows, then say so first, and expect the sentence to be believed only after you have kept it several times.

There is a sound report about the withholding, and it describes it exactly: two people who will not speak, and who turn their faces away from each other when they meet. What it names as the way out is an action, taken by whichever of the two moves first, which is the same shape as the return in the next step. One thing it is not. It names a limit of three days, and that limit is a ruling with conditions and a literature behind it. It is not a permission to be silent for three days.
