Why arguing with it does not work
When the thought is about God, or about whether you are secretly a disbeliever, the instinct is to settle it. To prove it wrong in your head, right now.
Look at what was given instead. Seek refuge, and desist. Two moves, both short, neither of them a debate.
There is a report where a man says one of them would rather be reduced to charcoal than say these thoughts out loud. The answer contains no engagement with the content at all. It is takbir, and praise that the whisper is all the thing amounts to.
That is not because the question has no answer. It is because you are not actually being asked a question. You are being handed something designed to be picked up, and the instruction is to put it down.
Qur’an and Sunnah

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah! one of us has thoughts of such nature that he would rather be reduced to charcoal than speak about them. He said: Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great. Praise be to Allah Who has reduced the guile of the devil to evil prompting.
