Use remedies

Ibrahim, on him be peace, in the Qur'an: and when I am ill, it is He who cures me. Cure is from Allah. The means are means, and the verse does not treat them as a rival.

Then the reports. In Bukhari, no disease has been created without its treatment also being created. In Muslim, there is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied the illness is cured by the permission of Allah.

Ibn al-Qayyim reads that sentence for what it does to a person who is ill, in al-Tibb al-Nabawi. He writes: وفي قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم لكل داء دواء تقوية لنفس المريض والطبيب وحث على طلب ذلك الدواء والتفتيش عليه فإن المريض إذا استشعرت نفسه أن لدائه دواء يزيله تعلق قلبه بروح الرجاء وبرد من حرارة اليأس وانفتح له باب الرجاء. Our rendering, and not a published translation: in his saying that for every disease there is a cure there is a strengthening of the soul of the sick person and of the physician, and an urging to seek that remedy and to search it out, for when the sick person senses that his illness has a remedy that removes it, his heart attaches to the spirit of hope, and cools from the heat of despair, and the door of hope opens to him.

So the report is not only a permission. What it is meant to do to somebody who is ill is start them looking.
