Lesson 5 of 6 · What the waiting costs

If you have been told to stop your medicine

Read this one twice, and read it out to whoever needs it.

If you have been told to stop your medicine so that the treatment can work, please speak to your doctor before you stop. Stopping suddenly is dangerous by itself, whatever the cause of the illness turns out to be.

You do not need to argue with anybody to do this. You do not need to decide who is right. You make one appointment, or one phone call, and you say that you are thinking of stopping and you want to know how.

While you are there, the other claims that travel with this one are worth naming, because they have nothing behind them. That psychiatric medicine is shirk. That it seals a jinn inside a person. That an illness of the mind is a sign of weak iman, which sits directly against Bukhari 5678 and Tirmidhi 2038 from the last lesson. And that an afflicted person should be struck, restrained, kept from sleep or food, or have anything forced into their mouth. Nothing in the sound sunnah supports any of that, and people have died.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Bukhari 5678, from the last lesson. The claim that an illness of the mind is a sign of weak iman sits directly against it.

And this is Tirmidhi 2038, the other one named. Between them they are why nothing in the sound sunnah supports stopping a medicine.

Usamah bin Sharik said:"Some Bedouins asked: 'O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) shall we treat (our ill)?' He said: 'Yes, O worshipers of Allah! Use remedies. For indeed Allah did not make a disease but He made a cure for it' - or - 'a remedy. Except for one disease.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w)! What is it?' He said: 'Old age
