Today, ask your spouse one question you cannot predict the answer to. Not "how was your day." Something like: what are you quietly worried about this month? Then stay quiet long enough for a real answer.
When the Prophet ﷺ was asked who he loved most among people, he answered with his wife's name, publicly and without hesitation. Knowing someone well enough to say that is not accidental. It is built by asking, and by listening to what comes back.

Strength of evidence: seen more than once. Replicated observational or longitudinal work, not tested against a control.
Accurate, current knowledge of a partner's inner world is what lets a response land as care rather than generic kindness. That knowledge decays by default, because people update their model of a spouse far less often than the spouse changes.
Most long-married people stop asking questions, because they assume they already know. The assumption is usually half-right and years out of date. Your spouse has kept changing while your picture of them stayed still. A question you genuinely cannot predict does two things at once: it updates the picture, and it tells them you noticed there was something to update. The silence afterwards matters as much as the question. First answers are rehearsed; second answers are true.

Keep in mind one small thing that matters to your spouse, and act on it unprompted.
If you are the one who goes quiet and pulls away, name the fear behind it and step back in: I shut you out because I was afraid of failing you.
Tune to what your spouse is feeling under their words today, and name it gently.
