For a sturdy child a smaller lunch is a nuisance. For one with nothing spare it is a reason to change the plan. Non-stimulant options exist and are worth asking about by name when appetite is the sticking point, since some of them do not carry the same effect. The decision belongs to the prescriber, but you can arrive with the question already framed.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear (Quran 2:286). What one person can carry and another cannot is treated there as a real difference rather than an excuse.

God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’

Alternatives are reasonably well described. A review found atomoxetine more effective than placebo, generally well tolerated in children and adolescents, and non-inferior to immediate release methylphenidate in the trials examined. A systematic review of bupropion in children and adolescents found some benefit for those who did not respond to or could not tolerate stimulants, though those studies were small. Neither is a straight upgrade, and both need time and monitoring of their own.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
A side effect matters in proportion to what that particular person had spare to begin with.
Some capsules are tiny pumps. A coating of powder gives an early lift, then water seeps in and slowly pushes a gel of medicine out through a laser drilled hole, with a little more strength held back for later in the day.
Parents often ask whether starting a stimulant now makes drug problems more likely later. The question deserves the actual evidence, gently given, rather than reassurance.
Much of the progress in these medicines over the past twenty years has been in how the drug is delivered rather than in new molecules. So if one version did not suit you, another form of the same drug can still be worth a try.
