Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Medication and how it works
The same holds when blood pressure rises on a stimulant that is otherwise working, since adding an alpha-2 agent can make it possible to keep the dose. Say which problem you most want touched first. That shapes the choice more usefully than any general ranking of the drugs, and it is the part only you can supply.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
Job said, 'Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful' (Quran 21:83). He said what was actually wrong, which is where getting the right help begins.

Remember Job, when he cried to his Lord, ‘Suffering has truly afflicted me, but you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’

In a randomised double-blind trial of children who had both ADHD and an anxiety disorder, atomoxetine improved both sets of symptoms compared with placebo. It is a trial in children rather than adults, and improvement in a trial is not the same as being right for every anxious person. It is still direct evidence for the case where the two travel together.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Different medicines carry different side pulls, so the right one depends on what else you are carrying.
Waiting to see how they get on carries a cost that is easy to miss. Every year a child spends behind narrows what is available to them the year after.
The most useful question about a dose is whether the person can tell. A shrug and 'I think it sort of helps a bit' usually means it is not yet doing its job.
Debt, impulsive spending, an account that never quite recovers: this belongs in the conversation about attention rather than in a separate drawer marked shame.
