It matters to the person taking one because the same enzyme sits in the gut and deals with things that arrive with food. That is why a few of these drugs come with a real list of foods and medicines to avoid, and why the list is not fussiness. If you are on one, every prescriber and pharmacist you see needs to know, including a dentist and anyone selling you something over the counter.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'Eat from the good things We have provided for you, but do not overstep the bounds' (Quran 20:81). Permission and limit arrive in the same sentence, which is precisely the position somebody on one of these medicines is in.

Reading risk in this field takes some care. A review of the large prescription record studies of ADHD medication found associations with fewer injuries, accidents and criminal charges, while flagging how carefully non-randomised data has to be interpreted. That work is about other drugs entirely. The transferable habit is checking what a stated risk or benefit rests on before acting on it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Blocking a clean up enzyme also blocks the job it does elsewhere, which is where the food interactions come from.
If you are taking one of these older medicines the dietary advice is not optional, and a sudden severe headache needs urgent attention.
A medicine can help some people and still fail to win approval for a condition. Modafinil is the usual example, cleared for a sleep disorder and short of the bar for attention.
Guanfacine and clonidine arrived here sideways. Both were blood pressure medicines that doctors noticed helped with impulsivity, and the formal approval came long afterwards.
Once you can follow the sequence, release, landing, clearing away and breaking down, most new drugs turn out to be recombinations of those four. That is a fair claim to competence and a good place to stop.
