Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › Medication and how it works
That last part answers a fear a lot of families carry quietly, since crushing or snorting such a product gains nothing at all. It also explains why the onset feels gentler, which some people prefer and others find too vague to be sure about. Both reactions are worth asking after rather than assuming, because the second one usually means the dose or the drug needs another look.
This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.
'If a troublemaker brings you news, check it first, in case you wrong others unwittingly and later regret what you have done' (Quran 49:6). Frightening claims about these medicines travel fast, and checking one before acting on it is the instruction given.

The worry that stimulant treatment leads to later substance problems has been examined directly. Using long term follow up data from a large childhood ADHD trial, with methods designed to handle confounding, stimulant treatment was not associated with increased substance use through adolescence into early adulthood. Follow up analyses cannot rule out every alternative explanation, and the feared association did not show up.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
When the body itself sets the pace of release, the way the drug is taken matters much less.
A genuine concern about misuse in a household is worth raising openly with the prescriber, who can choose the formulation with that in mind.
A few medicines leave very little space between the amount that helps and the amount that harms. Lithium is the classic one, and with those the blood test is part of the treatment rather than paperwork.
The medicine can help you focus. It will not make you want to study. Those are two different jobs and only one of them comes in a tablet.
One of these medicines arrives inactive and has to be broken down by your own body before it does anything at all. That design flattens the rise and removes the spike that misuse depends on.
