Where these panels earn their place is in dosing and tolerability. Someone who breaks a drug down slowly may need less of it, and someone who clears it fast can look like a non responder at an ordinary dose. What a result cannot do is choose the right medicine for a particular person, so it belongs in the conversation as one piece of information rather than as the answer. The real test is still what happens in you over the weeks after starting, watched honestly.

Predicting how one person will do from something measured in advance is harder than it looks. In a cohort of nearly two thousand adults followed for three years, higher repetitive negative thinking at the start predicted worse depression and anxiety later. That is a real finding about groups and still a weak guide to any single person's course. Measures like this shift the odds rather than settling what will happen to you.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Knowing how much of a drug ends up in someone's blood is a different question from knowing whether it will help them.
If a prescriber has asked for the panel for a specific reason, this is not a case for refusing it, only for reading it modestly.
Some antidepressants take weeks to build up and weeks to clear, so both the improvement and the aftermath run on a slower clock than you would expect.
You can say what an SSRI does in one sentence. It blocks the doorway that carries serotonin back out of the gap between two nerve cells, so more of it stays there for longer and is likelier to be picked up.
One person's side effect is another person's treatment. Sedation is a burden for someone who cannot get out of bed and a gift for someone who cannot get to sleep.
