That changes what a reminder has to do. Turning up the volume on a faint signal is useless when there is no signal at all. The thing has to be made present: an object left where you will trip over it, a note on the kettle, the bag by the door tonight for tomorrow, a photograph of what you are saving for. Crude and physical beats elegant and digital here, because a digital reminder lives somewhere you have to remember to look.
Let every soul consider carefully what it sends ahead for tomorrow (Quran 59:18). Tomorrow is something you deliberately bring to mind, which is the effort being asked for here.

A review of episodic future thinking describes the capacity to picture your own future in concrete detail and the jobs it does in planning and self control. It is a review of how the capacity works rather than a trial of any method, so read it as an account of why concrete beats abstract. It supports making the future specific and vivid, without telling you which reminder to use.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Something you can see in front of you does not depend on you remembering that it exists.
A list on the back of an envelope, made before the day starts, beats holding the day in your head. It does not have to be neat and it does not have to survive contact with the morning.
Take the Friday deadline and walk it backwards onto the days. What happens Monday, what happens Tuesday, written down where both of you can see it.
Walking away from a course or a job that was never going to fit can be the sensible move rather than a failure of nerve. It is also frightening, particularly when other people are paying for it.
