You need nothing for this. Clap a slow pattern, ask them to clap it back, then keep it running while you both count or walk in time to it. Comfortable tempo, not impressive tempo. The quiet advantage is that rhythm work does not feel like more reading, which matters for a child who has already decided that reading is the place where they fail.
Go at a moderate pace (Quran 31:19). A rhythm you can actually hold is the one worth practising, and the verse puts the manner of moving inside the practice rather than beside it.

The evidence in front of me is not about rhythm and reading, so take that link as the presenter's reading of her own field. What has been tested is that in a multicentre randomised trial, a structured bouldering psychotherapy programme reduced depression more than physical exercise on its own. That supports the smaller point only: how a movement session is shaped, and who is in it with you, does work that plain exertion does not.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Holding a beat uses the same sense of timing that hearing the separate sounds inside a word depends on.
Where reading difficulty is significant, rhythm practice sits alongside proper assessment and teaching, not in place of it.
Chasing the big hit is a trap. Aim for the quieter satisfaction you can have most weeks, because that is the one that lasts.
Clumsy is not a description you can work with. Balance, core strength, shifting your weight, big movements, small ones, catching a ball, keeping a beat: those you can look at one at a time.
If the word exercise makes you flinch, drop it. Say moving about, or getting out, and see whether a plan turns up.
