The first tightening, the first sharp word. Name it there, when it is still small.
When a prompting stirs you, the Qur'an says to seek refuge with God straight away. The first sharp word is that prompting, and it is far easier to turn from at the start than halfway down.

If a prompting from Satan should stir you, seek refuge with God: He is the All Hearing and the All Knowing

Susan M. Johnson (2008). Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love. Little, Brown
Conversation 1, Recognising the Demon Dialogues. Johnson names three patterns, Find the Bad Guy, the Protest Polka, and Freeze and Flee, and holds that the cycle, not the partner, is the enemy: naming it out loud is the first move of de-escalation.
Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Interrupting the cycle early, before flooding, is far easier than stopping it later.
