Assertiveness works best in the middle: clear enough to hold the line, warm enough to keep the bond. Over-explaining a refusal usually weakens both.

Both too little and too much assertiveness carry costs; a moderate, balanced level is most effective.

Declining clearly without over-explaining holds the boundary while keeping the warmth.
