Forgiving too fast, before atonement and change, buries the injury alive. True forgiveness follows real repair.
Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not wish that God should forgive you? (Quran 24:22). Pardon is a height to grow toward, not a shortcut to force.
Those who have been graced with bounty and plenty should not swear that they will [no longer] give to kinsmen, the poor, those who emigrated in God’s way: let them pardon and forgive. Do you not wish that God should forgive you? God is most forgiving and merciful

Gottman distinguishes forgiveness that follows real atonement from a cheap forgiveness offered early to end the discomfort. Forgiving before repair buries the injury rather than resolving it.
John M. Gottman (2011). The Science of Trust: Emotional Attunement for Couples. W. W. Norton
Atone, Attune, Attach. The betrayer atones without conditions and the hurt partner sets the pace; the couple then rebuilds attunement; and only then attachment. Skipping ahead to reconnection produces what Gottman calls cheap forgiveness.
Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Forgiveness that follows genuine atonement heals, while premature forgiveness without repair leaves the wound festering.
Where this sits: Gottman method, Trust and Commitment; Affairs (real vs cheap forgiveness).
Wanting comfort when you are hurting is a built-in human need, not a weakness to be ashamed of. Let yourself ask.
Name the specific moment your partner was not there when you needed them most, and how deeply it wounded you.
The one who caused the hurt listens to the pain non-defensively, without excuses, as long as it is needed.
