Lesson 3 of 6 · What birr al-walidayn actually requires

The one sentence

Asking one question, once, of a person qualified to answer it. Not a debate with your family.

The move

Separating honouring from obeying

5 minutes or less

  1. Write what you have been told you owe them.
  2. Separate it into two columns: honouring, and obeying.
  3. Notice that the lessons hold that birr does not require obedience to harm.
  4. Work from that line rather than from what was said to you at a difficult moment.

If it does not work

If the line is genuinely unclear in your case, that is a question for somebody qualified, asked in daylight, once, and not settled by whoever shouted last.

Write the one sentence

A specific plan works better than a good intention. Fill both halves in your own words.
